The cool, wet weather is a timely reminder that winter is just days away. But homeless people in South Australia have it tough all year round!
We invite everyone to get involved with a donation drive for a service project in aid of Rufus, a charity supporting homeless people and aiding them with their transition into housing accommodation.
The young single adults from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, along with young people of other faiths, are behind the donation drive and will be hard at work on the end-project day, Saturday 26 August, assembling the donations into street packs and home starter packages for RuFus clients.
The goal is to fill 120 street packs and 120 home starter packages – so please raid your cupboards or add several items specifically for this project to your trolley when next you have some spare dollars at shopping time.
We hope that some, if not all, of the street packs can be loaded into backpacks (they need to be sturdy packs that can handle outdoor weather and daily use) so please consider donating a backpack if finances allow; similarly, the home starter packs will be loaded into laundry baskets so we are aiming for 120 baskets via our ongoing advertising and collection process.
Thank you to those who have been in touch to say they are knitting scarves and beanies – this is a great way to show love to our less fortunate brothers and sisters. And thank you to Barry Riley who spoke to his dentist about the project, and was given 100 tubes of toothpaste for the cause. Keep up the good work everyone!
Here is a list (hopefully they are on ward/branch bulletin boards too) of items requested by Rufus. Please don’t be overwhelmed, just choose a couple of items:
